Ayurvedic Psychology for Womxn
There is a wealth of wisdom for our emotional, mental, and holistic health as womxn in Ayurveda. I apply decolonial, Ayurvedic psychology that has been around for thousands of years in a trauma-informed, gentle, and embodied way. Ayurveda recognises we are not all the same in many respects, and I am a firm believer of this too.
We are all wildly unique womxn.
In modern medicine and psychology, we compartmentalise the mind into 'mental health' and physical ailments into 'physical health' and so on. In Ayurveda, your mind, body, emotions, energy, and spirit are the same because we consider the whole person (not in fragmented parts). To work with the body is to work with your emotions, and vice versa. As our emotions govern much of how we feel mentally & physically, it is necessary to tend to our emotional wellbeing FOR our holistic wellbeing. Which is why, I believe in an embodied approach to Ayurveda for womxn especially.
Our dosha is our individual constitution (your mind-body-spirit type). I have witnessed and worked with many womxn who portray similar psychological characteristics in line with their dosha, whilst considering our unique life experiences, hxstories, and trauma. The three primary dosha's are called Vata, Pitta, and Kapha in Sanskrit. They correspond to the five major elements of air, ether, fire, water, and earth. The doshas represent the elements that exist inside the body and outside in our external environment. The five elements create balance or imbalance in your psychological state (and whole body).
For womxn, our psychological states fluctuate throughout our monthly menstrual cycle (during this season of life), with the lunar cycle, throughout a 24 hour day (the circadian rhythm), and the seasons. It has personally changed my life to understand myself as a cyclical womxn, rather than a (masculine) linear being. Different doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) govern our menstrual cycle at various times of the month, such as during the follicular phase (from menstruation to ovulation), ovulation, and the luteal phase (from ovulation to menstruation). Therefore, knowing how to work with your dosha and the menstrual cycle is invaluable for our emotional health as womxn and aligning with our natural dosha for optimal holistic health, balance, and harmony.
Many of us experience anxiety, stress, depression, mood changes, menstrual disorders and womb-related health issues directly affected by disharmony in our outer and inner environments. As womxn, much of our modern lifestyles, invisible labour (household & emotional - especially now with lockdowns around the world), and work structures create disease, imbalance and misalignment to what we actually need emotionally (and physically) during our various seasons as womxn (menstruation/pregnancy/menopause).
Ayurvedic psychology's beauty is that there are powerful practices that offer you the capacity to awaken your inner healer, your healing life force energy (shakti). The goal is to empower you so that you have the self-healing tools for life.
I apply all of the amazing Ayurvedic psychology teachings with womxn 1:1, including working with your Ayurvedic menstrual cycle, your psychological type (your dosha), cyclical yoga therapy for womxn, sacred rituals & embodiment practices for you to be the most healthy, balanced, and empowered womxn you deserve to be.
